Womb

This is the most beautiful gift ever. When I saw Melody lat weekend in Philly, I mentioned to her that I'm going to be having some surgery at the end of the summer - a partial hysterectomy. When she came over yesterday she said "I have a gift for you," and handed me this necklace she'd made. It didn't hit me immediately that it's a womb - to replace the one I'm shedding. How cool!

The stone is a piece of coral she found that happened to be shaped somewhat like a uterus and it's mounted in a silver frame that she fabricated with fallopian tubes and ovaries soldered in place. I adore the way the coral has that soft starburst pattern right in the center.

The back has a heart cut out from which the red coral shines through. It's also marked with Mel's stamp at the bottom.

The pendant hangs from two hinged rings and the strand is made from red frosted glass seed beads on flexible wire. I like that the strand is double on one side and single on the other.

I do not think I have ever had a nicer or more thoughtful gift. What did I do to deserve such a wonderful niece?

Melody designs and creates her original jewelry in South Philadelphia. Visit her blog to see what she's up to and her website to see what she's done. You can see what she has for sale in her Etsy shop where you can also request a custom piece. Mel loves to create and she's good at it!
